  It takes about 1 hour and a half by JR express trains.

  Horyuji temple is very close to Yougendo and can be reached by bus, bicycle or one stop on the JR train. We can happily give you a cycling map and recommend this as a good way to see local life in Japan.

It is 4 stops away, takes 15 mins by frequent JR trains. The last train to Oji leaves Nara around 00:00.

Osaka city has two major central areas, to go to Tennoji/Namba (South) is about 20 mins ride, to Umeda/Osaka (North) is 35 mins ride by express trains from Oji.

There are 2 ways to get to Koyasan from Yougendo. Take Wakayama Line from JR Oji to Hashimoto, or go to JR Shin Imamiya then change to Nankai Line Express. Both way takes around 70 mins.

The house itself is completely no smoking. There is a smoking area in the garden.

No. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. We have 2 western style toilets, 2 showers 3 sinks and a bath tub shared between all guests, we only have a few rooms so we hope that you will find these facilities ample. Unfortunately we do not have any traditional style bathing facilities such as a hot tub but can point you towards nearby hot springs and bath houses if you like.

• Do you have dormitories?

No. All rooms are for private use.

• Can you please squeeze 4 people into Asuka/Yamato room / 6 people into Ikaruga room?

The capacity of Asuka/Yamato room is 3 persons and 5 persons for Ikaruga room. It is all set by Hotel Business Law, I hope you understand.

Not many actually. We currently have 4 and we offer an intimate lodging experience that we hope you'll appreciate.

No we give guests keys to the entrance on checking in.

Yes we pride ourselves in being able to cater for all diets (Breakfast only, dinner available at our bar). If you have severe food allergies though you will need to make prior arrangements with us.

Yes we have unlimited Wi-Fi and wired internet access available free of charge.

• Is there a kitchen for guests to use?

We have a fully equipped kitchen for guests use. Please note the kitchen is closed in the morning from 7:00 – 10:00 AM.

At the moment we have bicycles to use for 500 yen. We can provide cycling maps to Horyuji temple and around the local area.

We currently have a vending machine and we sell some souvenirs such as Yukata sleeping robes and locally produced rice wines.　There is a 24 hour supermarket that sells almost everything you are likely to need within 1 min walking distance.

Check In / Out Time, Storing Luggage

• Can we arrive early to leave our luggage?

  Yes you are welcome to leave your bags with us from the morning of your stay (from 8 am onwards). If you are travelling to Yougendo from Kyoto and plan to spend the day in Nara it might save some time to store your luggage in the locker area at Nara station for the day. If you don't mind to spend an extra 15 mins travelling here however we'd love to give you maps and travel information to help you with your sightseeing of Nara park and its surrounds.

  Checkout is 11:00 AM or earlier.

• Can we leave our luggage with you after checkout?

  Yes you can. We normally keep luggage until 3:00 PM of the day of checkout but we can be flexible if you make prior arrangements with us.

  We are happy to store luggage for up to 2 months for returning guests. We are also happy to keep your luggage for short periods if it makes your journeying easier (spending the night at Koya san for example).

  We are currently accepting reservations for stays till the 31st of March 2012.

  No, we don't require a deposit but we do expect you to honour your booking with us.

  Yes, we kindly ask you to to provide credit card details to finalise your reservation via our SSL webpage or FAX.

  Yougendo welcomes children although parents are requested to keep an eye on little ones at all times, the house is very fragile with many gaps and steps. We have revised our child discount policy and currently are no longer able to offer special rated for infants or minors. We sincerely apologise and beg your understanding in this matter.

• Do you have a long stay discount system?

  From 1st of August 2010 10% discount will be applied for the reservations for more than 4 nights.

• Is it possible to rent the whole property?

  Yes it is. We are open to large groups coming to stay and events being held at Yougendo. Please contact us well in advance and we'd be happy to discuss it with you.

  To cancel a booking without incurring cancellation fees you must give us notice within three days. Please see our cancellation policy here for more information.

  We will happily accept credit cards numbers or you can make arrangements to pay us via the postal system or in person.

  You will enter our no show system. We will charge you for 1 nights' stay. You can not avoid us. We are very adept at recovering cancellation fees.

Local Area

• Are there any restaurants near Yougendo?

  Yes there are a lot of dining options in the immediate area.
  
  From February 2008 guests will be able to take advantage of our beautifully converted storehouse as a bar dining facility... In the meantime Kurobe "黒兵衛" is a local restaurant directly opposite Yougendo and very popular with our guests. They serve very a fresh selection of Japanese style foods and have an extensive selection of Sakes and other beverages. They can also cater to vegetarians and people with food allergies (you will need to make prior arrangements with us).
  
  Around the train station offers a large selection of places to eat from western style fast food to traditional Japanese fare. Some of the restaurants serve until around 10:30 PM while some are open till the early hours of the morning.

• Are there any amenities around Yougendo?

  We think you'll be happily surprised at the available range of amenities within close proximity to our house. A 24 hour supermarket, post office, banks, restaurants, Karaoke, hardware shops etc. are all a stone’s throw away. We doubt you'll get stuck for anything during your stay with us.

• Is there a cash point (ATM) near Yougendo?

  Yes, the post office is very near. The post office is your best bet for withdrawing cash from an ATM whilst travelling within Japan. The machines there take most cards and the service is offered in English.
  
  When you get here you'll understand what we mean.

• Is there an onsen (hot spring) near Yougendo?

  Yes there is. Mt. Shigi offers hot spring facilities with an outdoor bath and a natural water source said to be beneficial for a wide range of ailments.
  
  If you want to experience a hot spring and want to avoid the crowds or are a bit shy then we thoroughly recommend this hot spring. It is usually quite quiet and offers a serence bathing experience. Access is by 1-stop ride of train and bus or more conveniently taxi from Yougendo.

• Are there any activities to do around Yougendo?

  Mt. Shigi offers walking, a hot spring, pleasant night views and an agricultural theme park.
  
  We offer Sake tasting at our bar. We will give you an insight into how sake is produced, the different kinds and the correct way to drink. We are proud to be able to stock locally produced brews not readily available in shops or supermarkets.
  
  A new Karaoke shop just opened right next to our house.
  
  Other than that we have bicycles for riding around the area. Footballs, badminton, cricket sets etc. for taking to the park or down on the nearby riverbank, a BBQ area you can use or if you really want to get stuck in, you can help us out with gardening or around the house, we might even buy you a beer if you do!

General

• Is Yougendo a Ryokan or a Minshuku?

  Is Yougendo a Ryokan or a Minshuku?
  
  Well the answers is probably neither.
  
  A Ryokan is a high class Japanese inn and a Minshuku is a family run lodging. Both are usually purpose built buildings.
  
  We are just basically a large old house that we managed to get licensed to run as a lodging. We are comparable to a B&B in many ways although many of our customers feel that we offer more in terms of facilities and service.

• What does Yougendo mean?

  There is no specific meaning to the word Yougendo although the combination of “Kanji” Chinese characters is very nice when put together.
